"Energetic conductor Mikhail Shekhtman" - The Guardian
Mikhail Shekhtman, now considered one of the most versatile artists of his generation, was born in Moscow in 1989 as the son of Russian scientists. He discovered his love for music through his grandfather, who was himself a tenor.
Mikhail began piano lessons at the age of five and gave his first solo concert in Moscow only two years later, under the guidance of his first conducting and piano teachers Elena Aleksandrova and Vera Khoroshina at the Moscow State Conservatory "Academic Music College". He also studied organ in Russia and Austria. Shekhtman continued his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky State Conservatory under Pavel Nersessian and graduated with distinction in 2013. He also attended master classes with Michail Jurowski and Teodor Currentzis.
Since 2014 Shekhtman has conducted and performed with leading orchestras throughout Russia and worked intensively with opera singers. Well-known performances include the New Year's Concert in Moscow with the State Russian Chamber Orchestra and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra as well as the Advent Gala Concert with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under Harald Blomstedt.
In 2018 Shekhtman conducted the Russian State Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, where he conducted Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 and interpreted it on the grand piano at the same time. In summer 2018 Shekhtman conducted the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre during the festival "Stars of the White Nights" at the invitation of Maestro Valery Gergiev. In September 2018 Shekhtman opened the season with the 23rd piano concerto by Mozart.
During the concert season Shekhtman performed as pianist in London, Berlin, Madrid, Peralada, together with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. In February 2019 he conducted the 20th anniversary concert of the Oviedo Philharmonic Orchestra. In September 2019 he conducted the season opening concert with the Russian National Orchestra, which was broadcast by Medici.tv.
Shekhtman has an intensive collaboration with leading opera singers for concerts, opera performances and recordings. Together with soprano Julia Lezhneva he has travelled around the world - venues include the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Vatican in Rome, the Theater des Champs Elysees in Paris, Tonhalle Zurich, Helsinki Music Center, Amsterdam Musikgebouw, Melbourne Recital Centre, Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Hamburg Laeiszhalle, St.Petersburg Philharmonic. Further performances took place at festivals in Gstaad, Lucerne, Peralalda and Moscow.
Mikhail Shekhtman's CD recording on Decca Records, the world premiere of the project "Carl Heinreich Graun" together with Julia Lezhneva, was awarded the OPUS Classic Prize in Germany in 2018 and was named Bavarian Radio CD of the Month.
